How to prepare for the surgery?

The first thing you need to do in order to get eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is consulting with a competent plastic surgeon and an ophthalmologist as well. The doctor will take note of your vision and check for other eye-related ailments such as glaucoma or cataract. He will then require you to fill out a form stating any allergies that you may have or any medications or supplements that you consume regularly. The ophthalmologist and surgeon will also have you undergo the following tests-

  • Physical examination to assess the tear production in your eyes and to measure your eyelids.

  • Vision examination to test your vision from all angles. This is a crucial step as the insurance generally does not cover cosmetic surgeries. So, it becomes vital to check your vision and see if you are eligible for insurance coverage.

  • Eyelid photography to help plan the surgery.

Once you are through with your ophthalmologist appointment, you will proceed to consult with the surgeon. In your initial appointments, the surgeon will understand the expectation that you have from the surgery and discuss the various procedures that may suit you the best.

The procedure

The surgeon will start with a numbing medication that he will inject in your eyelids and have you wait for a while. Once you are all set for the surgery, the surgeon will start with your upper eyelids by cutting along the edge and removing the excess fat or skin. He will then move on to the lower eyelid and make an incision either inside the lid or in the crease of your eyelashes. Once the cut is made, the surgeon will remove the excess fat from the lower lid and seal the cut.
