Glee is expected to leave Netflix on December 1st, 2021 in the United States. Glee is now available in almost all Netflix locations, with the exception of the United States. Here’s all you need to know about it. Glee began airing in 2009 and ran for six seasons with a total of 121 episodes. The show is created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, all of whom currently work on projects for Netflix (albeit not solely). The high school musical series followed the Glee club’s antics as they attempted to rise through the ranks and become champions.
Seasons 1-4 of Glee was released on Netflix in the United States in September 2014, followed by season 5 in April 2015 and the final season in July 2015.
With the Fox library having largely left Netflix in 2018, the show should’ve left long before now (as we discussed here). New Girl and Glee were the only two series that defied the pattern. Glee was renewed for three years on Netflix US on December 1st, 2018, according to our data. The six seasons are expected to exit Netflix in the United States on December 1st, 2021, when the renewal period has expired. The dramedy frequently featured candid discussions on eating disorders, male and female body pressures, adolescent pregnancy, body dysmorphia, what it means to be trans, and how to cope with the devastating death of someone who died far too young. “The Quarterback,” Glee’s modest yet poignant memorial to the late Cory Monteith from Season 5, is still one of the show’s greatest episodes. Glee will always be a part of our lives no matter if it stays or goes from Netflix.
After Netflix, where will Glee be available to watch?
Glee is still available on Amazon Prime in the United States, but it’s unclear whether the show will be canceled there as well. Given the parent companies’ ownership of the program, we expect the license will go to either Hulu or Disney+ in the long run, but we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
Will Glee be removed from Netflix in December 2021?
aOnly the United States is set to lose Glee in December, but don’t expect it to stay on Netflix in other countries indefinitely.
Most other Netflix territories didn’t have Glee until 2019, however, thanks to a surprise licensing (Disney and 20th Century Fox tend to keep their licenses for Disney+ and Disney+ Star), the show was added to practically all regions.
On June 30th, 2019, Netflix in the United Kingdom received all six seasons. The series was streamed in Canada until 2017, when it was deleted in portions until being reintroduced on June 30th, 2019.
While we believe this to be just temporary, the removal date is unlikely to be on December 1st, 2021.
