IITs are ranked among the best universities in the world, and the Indian Parliament has designated them as Institutes of National Importance. IITs have also proven to be the most prestigious engineering institution in India.
For thousands of young people across the country, getting into IIT is a dream come true. However, due to insufficient assistance, several capable candidates fail to pass the JEE Advanced exam and are unable to enroll in IITs.
You’ll find all the information you need to apply to one of these elite institutions right below:
How to get into IITs via JEE?
Step 1:
You must first pass the JEE mains examination. You will have to answer a total of 7 questions out of the 90 on the paper. According to the new set of guidelines, there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Candidates that achieve extraordinary results are chosen to go to the next stage.
Step 2:
After passing the JEE mains exam, you will be able to take the JEE advanced exam. Only those applicants who scored above the NTA cutoff in the JEE mains are considered for this round. In JEE advanced, there are two question papers. Both papers have a three-hour time limit.
Step 3:
Now it’s time for the most important portion. To be considered for an IIT application, you must first achieve an All India Rank (AIR). Only students with a minimum of 10% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, as well as a 35% total average, are considered for the ranks. The requirements may vary depending on the student classifications.
Step 4:
Participating in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority’s common process is the final and most important step. You can only participate in this procedure if you have an All India Rank.
What is the key distinction between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced?
Every student who wishes to apply to an IIT must first take the JEE Main Examination. After qualifying, he or she must take the JEE Advanced Exam. Only those who pass JEE Advanced and receive an All India Rank (AIR) are eligible for admission to the IITs (subject to fulfillment of other eligibility criteria).
NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, SFIs, and State Engineering Colleges only accept students who have passed JEE Mains (for some States).
As a result, passing both the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams is required for admission to IITs. The fundamental distinction between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced is this.
Eligibility to participate in the JEE (Main) Exam
If you passed the class 12th or equivalent examination in one of the preceding two years of the year in which the JEE (Main) is being held, or if you appeared in the class 12th or similar examination in the year in which the JEE (Main) is being held, you will be eligible.
IIT Admissions Criteria
All IITs in India entail some eligibility requirements for admission. You must meet at least one of the following two criteria (after your Board results are released):
- A minimum of 75% aggregate in Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination or comparable grades.
- Be in the top 20% of successful candidates in each category in the corresponding Class 12th Board test of that year. Every year, when the JEE Advanced test is completed and all Board results are available, these category-specific top-20 percentile cut-off score lists are released.
Both the Class 12th aggregate marks and the top 20%ile cut-off marks will be calculated using the following five subjects’ grades:
1. Physics
2. Chemistry
3. Mathematics
4. Language
5. Aside from the four topics listed above, you may choose any subject you choose (the subject in which you have scored the highest marks will be considered).
To tackle solve complex problems in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, you must have an unquenchable zeal. You cannot simply give up. Every day, you must practice problem-solving. Fundamental notions must be comprehended. You can’t get into IITs by memorizing formulas. You must hone your analytical and logical thinking skills – specifically, analytical and logical reasoning in Science and Mathematics. Formulas are nothing more than a tool. However, you won’t be able to crack it unless your concepts are crystal clear.
Exams other than JEE for IIT admissions
The list of tests that allow students to enroll in various programs at the IIT is extensive. Candidates must, however, have a thorough understanding of each of the exams as well as the needed criteria.
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)
For admission to a master’s degree, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is used to assess candidates’ grasp of undergraduate engineering and scientific disciplines. The GATE exam cutoff scores differ depending on the courses and institutes.
JAM
For admission to various M.Sc and integrated Ph.D. programs at the IITs, students can sit the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) test.
UGC NET
If you have completed your master’s degree and are seeking research opportunities at IITs, UGC NET is the exam to take. Cracking the UGC NET exam, one of the most prestigious and high-standard exams in the country, would qualify you to apply for research programs at the IITs.
UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design)
UCEED is held at IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, and IIT Guwahati to select qualified applicants for BDes courses. Candidates can take the UCCED exam for two years in a row, according to authority rules. Only one academic year is valid for the UCEED grade.
HSEE (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination)
IIT Madras administers the HSEE national level test to select applicants for the five-year integrated master’s degree in humanities and social sciences offered by the institution’s concerned department.
Conclusion
This was everything about the procedures for gaining admission to IIT. Time and effort are required for success. If you’re confident and ambitious enough to put in that much effort, don’t hesitate to go for it. Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements before applying for any of these exams, otherwise your candidature will be canceled.
