Elon Musk announced in 2022 that Neuralink will begin implanting brain chips into humans; Musk likened its chip, which measures roughly 23 millimeters (0.9 inches), to being similar to wearing a Fitbit on your skull with tiny wires attached.

Neuralink intends to initially use their device with those suffering from severe spinal cord injury to help them talk, type and move with brainwave control.

On Friday, the brain-chip startup released video footage depicting an African monkey playing an easy videogame after receiving implants of its new technology.

Neuralink works by recording and decoding electrical signals from the brain using over 2,000 electrodes implanted into areas of a monkey’s motor cortex that coordinate hand and arm movements, according to its voiceover in this video.

Musk is well known for assembling teams of experts from different fields to advance technology that was previously restricted to academic labs through companies such as Tesla Inc, SpaceX and Boring Co.

Connecting brain and electronics directly is nothing new; doctors regularly implant electrodes into patients’ brains for stimulation purposes such as treating Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and chronic pain. Furthermore, implanted sensors have allowed paralyzed individuals to use brain signals to operate computers or move robotic arms via implanted sensors.

Musk’s proposal goes further. Neuralink intends to build on existing medical treatments as well as eventually perform surgeries to increase cognitive functioning.

Neuralink is not the only company developing AI for brain applications.

Bryan Johnson, best known for selling Braintree to PayPal for $800 million in 2012, launched Kernel as an “advanced neural interfaces” company to treat disease and extend cognition in 2016.
